Hello! My name is Sarah Nienhuis. We recently moved into the area and I’m so excited to teach music to CELA’s students! After 17 years of teaching in the public schools, I finally have the chance to combine my core values and beliefs with what I teach every day. I truly believe that God has brought me to this school and I can’t wait to see what He has in store for us as we learn music together.
My background includes 9 years of teaching K-5 music with a few years of middle school general music, and 8 years of teaching high school choir. My main instrument is the voice, and I love instilling in my students that yes, everyone can sing! In the general music classroom, I have vast experience teaching African drumming, Orff, recorder, movement, solfege, basic music theory and music history. Most of my adult life has also included singing on worship teams and using my gifts outside of the classroom as well.
I am married to Dean, and we have 3 college-aged children, Sam, Elle and Jack. We have a big, beautiful Bernese Mountain dog named Grizzly and a couple of stuck-up cats. We love to travel and in the past few years, we have started to use an RV to see all the beauty the US has to offer. I love reading and listening to books, hiking, and exploring, and eating fancy food. I’m also going to start singing on the worship team at our new church home.
“When I joined the CELA team, I came with almost 18 years of experience teaching K-12 music/choir in the public setting. I have been overwhelmed with gratitude to land in a school that shares the same Christian and moral values as I do in my personal life. The staff at CELA have been extremely welcoming and even though I joined CELA mid-year, I was made to feel like part of the family, and I knew I belonged here right away. The staff is ready to help in any way they can and go the extra mile for each other. Students at CELA have a strong desire to learn and try new things. I have been impressed with how much they care about academics and that speaks volumes not only to the amazing staff here, but also to the strong parental support and family background our students are growing up in. CELA’s student-led chapels teach many leadership skills like public speaking, creating presentations and worship leading. I see this carry over into the music classroom as students are very comfortable performing and have strong musical skills. Students will leave CELA with a firm foundation, equipped to be Christian leaders in a world that desperately needs God. ”
